The advantage of a ground mounted system is that the aspect, pitch and lack of shading can all be maximized, thereby improving overall yield. There are lots of ground anchor systems available, from free standing with ballast to pile driven to concrete foundations. The type of ground available denotes the choice as much as anything but in all cases the land can still be grazed by animals such as sheep and therefore land use and ecology is relatively unchanged.

Land-based solar systems have been criticised, described as farms that will obliterate the countryside. The reality is that the planning system in the UK would not allow indiscriminate use of agricultural land, both from a visual or a functional perspective.

Solar arrays can also be used in land adjacent to commercial buildings. If companies are contemplating covering storage yards or parking areas, these provide ideal opportunities for PV.
